Upcycle Challenge FAQs

1. How do I enter?

  1. Find an object you don’t use anymore
  2. Take a before photo
  3. Document your progress by keeping a diary and taking photos
  4. Take an after photo of your creation
  5. Fill in the entry form

 2. Who can apply?

If you fall into one of the six categories described below you can apply!

  • INDIVIDUAL EASTERN-MIDLANDS WASTE REGION CATEGORY

Open to all individual and independent entrants based in any of the following counties: Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath & Wicklow.

Entrants must not be entering under affiliation with any school or organisation, and the work must be done on their own, allowing for health and safety supervision and assistance where necessary.

  • INDIVIDUAL CONNACHT-ULSTER WASTE REGION CATEGORY

Open to all individual and independent entrants based in any of the following counties: Cavan, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Monaghan, Roscommon & Sligo.

Entrants must not be entering under affiliation with any school or organisation, and the work must be done on their own, allowing for health and safety supervision and assistance where necessary.

  • INDIVIDUAL SOUTHERN REGION CATEGORY

Open to all individual and independent entrants based in any of the following counties: Clare, Carlow, Cork, Limerick, Kerry, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford & Wexford.

Entrants must not be entering under affiliation with any school or organisation, and the work must be done on their own, allowing for health and safety supervision and assistance where necessary.

  • SCHOOLS CATEGORY

Open to entrants from entire schools or individual classes from Primary and Secondary Schools nationwide. Entrants must enter under their school name and are permitted to work in groups in this category. Teacher or adult supervision where required is permissible, but the groups must try to complete their entry without assistance.

  • COMMUNITY CATEGORY

Open to entrants working as a group in their local community eg. Tidy Towns, Scouts, Men’s Sheds or sports clubs. Entrants must enter under their community group name and are permitted to work in groups in this category. Adult supervision where required is permissible, but the groups must try to complete their entry without assistance.

  • PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY

Open to entrants with professional skills in upcycling materials and items, whether as their profession or with a history in upcycling. Judges will be closely searching for high quality finishes and touches, with the standard of entries in this category expected to be heightened.

3. How do I fill out the entry form?

To enter fill out this Google form click here. You can answer by typing in the question boxes or clicking the dropdown menu.

4. How do I upload my photos?

To upload your photos they need to be in a PDF document. Insert your photos into a Word/Google Docs page and click ‘File’. In Word click ‘Save As’, one of the options in the drop down menu will be to save the file as a PDF. On Google Docs click ‘Download’, one of the options in the drop down menu will to be to download the document as a PDF.

5. Which category do I qualify for?

There are six categories for entrants this year. They are:

  • Best individual in Connacht/Ulster Region,
  • Best individual in Southern Region,
  • Best individual in Eastern/Midlands Region,
  • Best Professional
  • Best Community Group
  • Best School

6. When is the deadline for submissions?

Thursday 27 October 2022

7. Can I enter more than once?

Yes! You will need to document the process for each project individually and upload separate entry forms.

8. Is it free to enter?

Yes!

9. What are the prizes?

Each category winner will receive a cash prize of €750

10. What are the terms and conditions?

11. Can I enter with something that I have already made?

You must have taken before photos of your unused object as well as documented your process.

12. Is the competition beginner friendly?

Yes! The competition is open to all levels and capabilities.

13. I do not live in Ireland, can I apply?

No.

14. When will the winners be announced?

15. How will the winners be selected?

All entries will be reviewed by professional judges.
